What are steel connection calculations?
Steel connections are structural elements used for transferring the forces between steel sections. The connections need to transfer normal, shear moment loads.
The core connection classes can be grouped in
- beam to beam
- splice
- column to beam
- bracing connections.
Connection designs not only need to assure that a connection will not fail under its specified load but also satisfy the needs of the fabricator and steel erector. There is no point designing a joint that cannot be fabricated or erected.
It is common practice that a connection needs to be verified by calculations to proof the weld, plates, sections and bolts are with the stress limits of the material. These calculations are presented in a report.

How do we calculate steel connection joints?
At Restoric Design we use specialist connection design software to assist us with our connection design. This software calculates the connections based on the finite element method (FEM) also know as the FEA (finite element analysis).
Based on the preferences of the fabricator and the types of loads (ie moment connection) we design a connection. The loads, which are specified by the structural engineer on the project are then used to verify the connection.
Bolts, plates and welds are sized in accordance with the loads to ensure the results are within the material properties of the elements.
What do we provide
Each steel connection we design is fully detailed on our “connection drawing” which is part of the initial issue pack. The initial issue pack includes general assembly plan views, elevations, sections and the connection drawing.
Each connection is detailed and refers to the calculation report. The calculation report, a separate PDF document includes the input information (loads, section sizes, bolts etc.), calculation method and formulas uses as well as the results.
Why consider us
- We have proven quality processes which are certified under ISO 9001.
- An experienced team of detailers and checkers, not a one man show
- We do this all the time – over 700 projects completed to date
- Diverse policies and standards implement as well as liability insurances in place
- Great reviews by our clients as well as our employees which makes a great company.
How much does a connection design and calculations cost
To produce a report and connection details we offer fixed price quotations. We do not insult our clients with hourly rates as we understand the importance of budgets.
We produce our comprehensive quotations based on the structural engineers’ drawings.
Email your structural engineers drawings now and receive a detailed quotation within 24 hours.
